Anyway, for dads out there who aren’t quite sure, kick-off is at 6:30PM EST. (That’s the East Coast of the US, in case you’re wondering!).

In the UK, that means you’ll be watching in your pyjamas as it’s at 11.30PM GMT. In France, it’s Monday morning, or 12:30AM CET. In Sydney, Australia, it’s also Monday morning – 10.30AM AEDT.

In the UK, November 5th is bonfire night/firework night/Guy Fawkes night. It commemorates the arrest of Guy Fawkes in 1605 in the bowels of the House of Lords while he was guarding a pile of explosives placed there by members of the Gun Powder Plot. Wikipedia has a full article on it here, but sufficed to say on bonfire night, its become tradition to set off a load of fireworks. For those readers in the US, it’s a lot like July 4th.

Anyway, last night we took Little M to a local firework display. We got her dressed in her pyjamas,

then into a snow suit, and finally a hat and gloves. Almost ready for the next Ice Age. We drove down to the local park, met up with my sister, brother-in-law and his sister and waited for the light show to begin! As you would expect at an event like this, it was very busy, so we made the usual arrangements for meeting points in case we got separated. However, we didn’t need to do this because we got an excellent spot where we could see everything, and there was hardly anyone around! Bonus!

The 25-minute display ended in a flourish of fireworks all exploding overhead and we headed home – to a surprise for Little M. My brother-in-law and I had bought our own fireworks and started our own display. Roman Candles, Catherine Wheels, rockets, sparklers, the lot. By the time we got finished, it was 9.30 and we were all freezing, but Little M had a great time. She’s still talking about it today!

Apparently, Daddies do better fireworks.

So, if you’ve been in or around Glasgow over the past few days, you’ll have noticed that it’s been a little dreich. Thankfully, this fair city of mine has plenty of things to do during those days when only ducks venture out. Glasgow has a wide network of council-run sports facilities, and through my work I have a membership to the Glasgow Club. A benefit of being a member is that I get to access all their facilities at no extra cost – including any of the swimming pools.

So, today I took my daughter to Scotstoun Leisure Centre and took advantage of my Glasgow Club membership. Being under 5, she gets in for free and I get in as part of my membership. No money to hand over! Even better! As a Scot, there’s nothing I like better than getting in essentially for free! My wife and I are both members, and we bring our daughter to the pool here quite often. At the weekend, as you’d expect, it’s a little busier, and today we had to wait for the next session to start before we went in.

The main pool was VERY cold. So much so that she went a little blue, so it was time to head to the kiddie’s pool. MUCH warmer. In fact, I could have stayed in there all day. I probably would have if there had been a swim-up bar, but hey-ho, you can’t have it all. Maybe something to add in time for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games..

All-in-all, the visit was fun – as it always is – and we’ll be back again soon. Whether its raining or not.
